This kiva is from the earlier Anasazi habitations on the mesa top prior to the move to the more protected cliff dwellings which have fascinated visitors for decades. Kivas are thought to be ceremonial, religous or communal gathering places similar to our churches today. The kivas were built underground and featured a bench around the preimeter, a ladder into the kiva and a depression carved in stone where offerings or other items were placed. This image is geo-tagged using iTag although this site does not support transport to the coordinates in Google Earth.
